REDESIGNED by Robert Trent Jones in 1960 the South Course at Firestone Country Club, Akron hosts the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.
The 7400 yard par 70 will test the world’s best golfers this week with a series of long par fours and one of the longest par fives anywhere.
Famously the 16th is 667 yards long with a pond at the front of the green which catches out many an errant ball.
The field is for the world’s top 50 but only 40 are here with 10 Europeans deciding to opt for the 100th French Open in Paris.
World No.1 Jason Day, US Open winner Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth lead the field with the likes of Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Matt Kuchar also taking part.
Hitting the ball long isn’t going to help here unless you are accurate and GIR are the stats I’ve been looking at.
With that in mind I like the look of Jason Dufner. He has two top 10s in his last four outings and has only hit over 70 three times from 12 rounds. At Oakmont two weeks ago he finished T8 but didn’t sparkle.
He has had two top 10s in three tries at Firestone and is 7th in GIR (70.40%) and 53rd in driving accuracy (64.10%).
It was good to see Jim Furyk back to form after a long lay-off this year with a wrist injury. A T2 at the US Open showed he was back to his best. He’s never won at Firestone but is second in all-time earnings with nine top 10s, including a T3 last year. His driving accuracy is is 68.57% and GIR 68.89% so should be a good bet.
