Oct 29: SPFL First Scorer Tips & Contest

Written by

THE only online bookie that lists SPFL and Scottish Cup first-scorer prices for every game are McBookie.

McBookie‘s Damian Walker is back with his first-scorer tips and he’s also challenging punters to pick their own. Every week one person with a correct prediction will be chosen at random to win a £10 bet.

There were several no winners last week and the previous week the winner was Danny Higgins of Inverness – I forgot to add his name to the post

You can comment with your pick here and give any reasoning but to enter the contest you have to email [email protected] Bonus excluders don’t qualify for the prize.

Quote player’s club and first-scorer price with McBookie – Scottish league games only – for a chance to win.

Here is Damian with this weekend’s selections.

He says: I’ll start this week’s column with a question: Just how good are second-placed in the Championship Dundee Utd?

It is one I have been struggling to answer all season. Ignoring extra time and penalties these are their 90-minute results in all competitions since the start of the season:- D W D W D W L W D D W L L W D  DW W.

A pretty inconsistent record you’d have to say but on the positive side they are now unbeaten in five matches.

Yet I am still not sure just how good they are. Their last four wins have been against Morton, Stranraer, St Mirren and Dumbarton.

So three of the bottom four clubs in the Championship and a cup win in extra time over a League One side.

One thing I am sure of, is on the evidence seen this season, they don’t deserve to be odds on at home to Falkirk who sit just one point behind them in the Championship table and beat United 3-1 in the League last month.

That price just cannot be right. So the obvious answer is a Falkirk first scorer. Bairns’ striker John Baird made a slow start to the season with no goals in his first eight games but has scored five in his next eight. Baird is 13-2 with McBookie to grab the opener on Saturday.

I always think the best value lies in the lower reaches of the SPFL where week in week out bookies show their lack of knowledge and this week is no different.

As you may know I blind price every game then check my tissue prices against the bookies’ “real” prices. And when it came to the Berwick v Arbroath game I had the Smokies as clear favourites at around 11-10 but the firms see it differently with Berwick 5-4 market leaders.

I’m not sure how though as Berwick have gone four games without a win and last weekend were dumped out of the Scottish Cup after losing 3-2 at home to Hawick Royal Albert.

HRA sit 11th in the Lowland League and have lost six of their 11 matches conceding 28 goals. Make no mistake this was a dire result for Berwick.

And of their three league wins two have been against the bottom two teams in Edinburgh City and Cowdenbeath.

Arbroath, on the other hand, have beaten the top two in League Two this season – Forfar and Elgin.

Smokies’ midfielder Martin Scott has been in the goals since joining this season and has four already, including the winner against Forfar two games ago. Scott can be backed at 8-1 with McBookie to get the opening goal.

The final selection is also in League Two where Stirling Albion look overpriced away to Clyde. The Binos have steadied the ship, especially defensively, under caretaker boss Martyn Corrigan and have yet to concede in their three games since he took charge.

Clyde are priced at 8-11 with Stirling Albion 19-5 and that latter price is too big based on current form. No point being clever when going for a big-priced outsider so I’m on Darren Lee Smith at 7-1 with McBookie for the opener.
