Paul Paton and Callum Morris have been called into the Northern Ireland squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Germany.

St Johnstone midfielder Paton has two caps, the most recent coming in the friendly away to Wales in March.

Aberdeen defender Morris was part of the squad for the opening Group C qualifier against the Czech Republic, but did not play in the game in Prague.

NI host San Marino on Saturday and face Germany away on Tuesday, 9 October.

Defender Craig Cathcart and striker Liam Boyce have withdrawn from Michael O’Neill’s squad for the two qualifiers.

Former Cliftonville man Boyce sustained a knee injury in Ross County’s defeat by St Johnstone on Saturday.

With Wigan’s Will Grigg missing both games for family reasons, Boyce’s withdrawal leaves just three recognised strikers in the Northern Ireland squad – Kyle Lafferty, Conor Washington and Josh Magennis.

Watford defender Cathcart pulled out of the back-to-back matches because of a groin injury, leading manager O’Neill to bring in veteran Aaron Hughes.

Hughes, 36, played in three matches at Euro 2016 to bring his caps haul to 103.

The former Newcastle and Aston Villa defender signed for Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters after Euro 2016 but his new club’s season has yet to start.

Northern Ireland’s updated squad:

Goalkeepers: Michael McGovern (Norwich), Alan Mannus (St Johnstone), Trevor Carson (Hartlepool)

Defenders: Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans (both West Brom), Aaron Hughes (Kerala Blasters), Conor McLaughlin (Fleetwood), Lee Hodson (Rangers), Michael Smith (Peterborough), Tom Flanagan (Burton), Ryan McGivern (Shrewsbury Town), Callum Morris (Aberdeen)

Midfielders: Steven Davis (Southampton), Niall McGinn (Aberdeen), Oliver Norwood (Brighton), Corry Evans (Blackburn), Jamie Ward (Nottingham Forest), Shane Ferguson (Millwall), Stuart Dallas (Leeds), Paddy McNair (Sunderland), Matthew Lund (Rochdale), Paul Paton (St Johnstone)
