SEP 30: CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BETTING PREVIEW

IT was a another two defeats for English clubs last night after three on matchday one.

Chelsea’s defeat of Maccabi is the only one enjoyed by Premier League clubs in the group stage and tonight Manchester clubs United and City will be looking to add to that.

Louis van Gaal’s Reds have hit the top despite not being at their best while City have followed their loss at home to Juventus with two in the Premier League.

United were surprised 2-1 by PSV so tonight is almost a must-win match when Wolfsburg come calling.

The Germans were motoring along nicely until running into Robert Lewandowski who sparked a defensive collapse with five goals in nine minutes.

That 5-1 defeat by Bayern Munich was followed by a 1-1 home draw with Hannover and at the same time there is uncertainty over club sponsors VW.

Wolfsburg haven’t won away from home this season and a Man Utd success at 4-5 with Ladbrokes looks a great price.

Memphis Depay has produced in Europe and is 2-1 at McBookie and BetVictor to score at any time.

The Wolves have forward thrust from the likes of Bas Dost, Max Kruse, Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler but United have conceded just once at the Theatre of Dreams.

City face a tougher test against a Borussia Moenchengladbach side who sacked boss Lucien Favre after starting the season with six straight defeats. Confidence has been restored with seven goals in wins against Stuttgart and Augsburg.

The ground will be buzzing for the club’s first elite Euro tie at home since the 70s but doubts remain after they were well beaten in Sevilla. City were ripped to bits by Spurs minus crocked skipper Vincent Kompany and rested keeper Joe Hart.

Kompany is a doubt but Hart will be back and while City could win best bet is over 2.5 goals at 13-16 with 888Sport with their last four going that way.

Elsewhere, PSV travel to CSKA Moscow trying to build on their defeat of Man United but face a tough test against the in-form Russians.

CSKA were edged out by Wolfsburg on matchday and followed that with an amazing 6-4 at Saransk. They have won eight and drawn two to lead the league and look worth a shout at 5-6 but with both sides scoring and conceding best bet could be over 2.5 goals at 17-20 with BetVictor and McBookie.

PSV will need to keep a close eye on Seydou Doumbia who has returned to the club on loan from Roma and hit four goals in three league outings. He is 13-8 at Ladbrokes to score.

Juventus played well at the Etihad but haven’t followed it up in Serie A and after one win in six trail the leaders by 10 points. Maybe they’re saving their best for Europe and tackle a Sevilla side who have a few injury problems.

It won’t be easy but Juve can edge this one and I’m backing Paul Pogba to score at 11-4 at Betfred after being the best player on show at the Etihad. Striker Mario Mandzukic is out.

Antoine Griezmann has hit four in four for Atletico Madrid and is 19-5 to score first against Benfica tonight. We know Benfica are stronger at home than away and this season they’ve backed up that belief with a 100 per cent league record in front of their home fans and two defeats out of two away from home. Griezmann can score and I also believe Atletico will win at a best 11-19 with 10bet.

Atletico’s La Liga rivals Real head for a Malmo side just happy to be here. They were outclassed but not embarrassed in their opener as they went down 2-0 at PSG and while they are unbeaten in 12 at home another two-goal defeat looks about right for the Swedes who lost by that margin at home to Juventus and Atletico last season.

Real couldn’t score against Malaga but are decent on the road in the Champions League and while they’re short at 1-4 generally I’m backing them minus one on the handicaps at 13-19 at 888Sport. Cristiano Ronaldo will want to make his mark while rival Lionel Messi is out injured but to score he is no bigger than 10-17 with 888Sport to net at any time. Karim Benzema is better value at 24-23 with the same firm.

Astana hold the first Champions League match in Kazakhstan when Galatasaray visit. The Turks started with a defeat at home to Atletico so need a win here and should get it even if forward Burak Yilmaz is injured. Lukas Podolski may have to step up to the plate and is 5-2 at 888Sport to hit the target.

Gala have failed to win in 12 Champions League but Astana are possibly the weakest side they’ve faced and if they can handle the occasion they look decent value at 29-20 with Coral.

The other game sees PSG head for Shakhtar Donetsk and they look a little short at a best 9-10 with Betfred. Shakhtar have lost one of their last eight home games in the Champions League but five of those were draws.

However, they have failed to score in their last three Champions League outings and that stat will give PSG hope.
